NOT TONIGHT

There’s a moonlight that dances
Into my window each night
With a deeply glow,
But not tonight.

There’s a cricket that sings
Into my window each night
With a sweetly chirp,
But not tonight.

There’s a jasmine that floats
Into my window each night
With a dreamy breath,
But not tonight.

There’s a whisper that breezes
Into my window each night
With an airy kiss,
But not tonight.

There’s a night dew that drops
Into my window each night
With a lightly lick,
But not tonight.
DIE COUNTING SHEEP

The dark and a yawn drive me to bed,
but though on a pillow I rest my head
sleep does not come,
but races ahead of my thoughts
and winks at me with a backward taunt.
I caught her last night
and held her tight
’til the starling sang in the light.
And tonight she bids me chase again,
but I grow weary of her loaded game.
My eyes sting
and tear
for fear I shall never know easy sleep,
but must fight
and cajole
and weep her favour each night
or die
counting sheep.
