Two Blue Butterflies

Two blue butterflies
danced in the afternoon sun,
one foot apart,
yet ever one.

Not a waltz, not a jive,
but a dip and a dive,
and a musical tone
all of their own.

They whirled up,
they twirled down,
through trees all around—
then just for fun
they basked in the sun.

Where they went after,
I do not know.
I could not follow,
they could not show.

Two Wood Pigeons

Two wood pigeons
locked in a waddling chase,
scratching up dust,
heads bopping apace.

It’s early evening,
‘bout four o’clock—
seems to be when
the male goes a-cock.

She’s having none of it.
Just wants her seeds.
Perhaps a nice biscuit
with a cup of tea.
